Watchlist: Seven Vancouver-based startups here to help parents
A septet of companies (plus one honourable mention) that, through everything from smart strollers to easy-to-access childcare, are coming to the rescue of the most tired.
Recently, we’ve counted local climatetech, clamoured for cleantech, and broadcasted about bluetech. But what about parent-tech? Despite its grammatical shortcomings (I definitely had to ask our managing editor, Kate Wilson, if I was conjugating this correctly) the space is on the rise. There is a major demographic looking to do things smarter, safer, and cleaner for the pickiest yet most-cherished of clients: their children. Here are the innovators at the forefront of Vancouver's parent-tech space. Or was it parenttech? “Kate!”
Brood Care
Brood Care has built a community of birth workers, doulas, and care workers redefining the meaning of family support. It offers in-person doula services as well as online courses aimed at providing care, knowledge, and community for families of all shapes and sizes. The mission? Thriving families create healthy communities.
Talking the talk: There is some distinct Brood Care flavour at our upcoming #vtjtalks event, Entrepreneurial Parents: Scaling a Business and Family Together. CEO Lizzy Karp is moderating the chat while Diraj Goel, a Brood Care advisor, is a panellist.
Ellibaby
Ellibaby is an innovative company that creates toys built to grow with kids and their families. Its founders, Serena Parbatani and Zamina Sunderji-Karim, felt that the baby industry was toxic and broken, and that it stresses overconsumption and “need-to-haves” that aren’t inclusive of all parenting styles or family requirements.
Building blocks: Ellibaby, though, isn’t throwing the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to the materials it uses. Wooden toys, once a staple, very much have their place in the contemporary Ellibaby portfolio according to Sunderji-Karim.
With support from Ellibaby, we’re chatting entrepreneurial parents at our next #vtjtalks event.
