New national digital directory launches to support Black-Owned Businesses
This week, the CBCC and Uber Canada unveiled Black Business Direct, a national digital directory to help promote and support Canadian Black-owned businesses.

The Black start-up community has always found ways to support one another — whether it was surveys, or crowd-sourced lists, entrepreneurs have come together from across the country to sustain a living listing of Black-owned businesses.
The Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) decided there must be a better way to unite Canadian Black-owned businesses in a national repository. This week, the CBCC and Uber Canada unveiled Black Business Direct, a national digital directory to help promote and support Canadian Black-owned businesses. This new directory builds on earlier efforts to create a unified, community-based platform.
‘‘Black entrepreneurs are incredible innovators and make a tremendous contribution to the Canadian economy,” said Christelle Francois, President of CBCC. “The directory will serve as a powerful tool and contribute in an impactful way to the community business ecosystem. This incredible partnership with Uber Canada creates the opportunity to support Canadian Black-owned companies to be championed and supported.''
CBCC says that the directory is a comprehensive, easy-to-access resource that Canadians can use to discover and support local Black-owned businesses across the country. It’s free for Black-owned businesses to join and free for consumers to view.
Local Black-owned businesses agree that a directory is a welcome addition. Colin Elvis, the founder of BIPOC Futures, believes the platform will give Black-owned businesses the exposure they need to grow. “A Black business directory is important because it allows for businesses to be seen without getting lost in the shuffle. Some businesses rely heavily on their community to support them, but if owners can’t afford to spend on marketing and advertising, it becomes very hard for them to gain exposure. A directory will allow for more voices to be heard and create more opportunities for small businesses to become competitive.''
For Uber Canada, supporting the directory was a natural alignment to their corporate mission. “Uber is a company that powers movement, which is the essence of liberty. So it’s essential that we continue to channel our global breadth and technology to confront systemic racism and step up as an ally to the communities we serve,” said Tony West, Uber’s Chief Legal Officer. “We are proud to partner with the CBCC to launch Black Business Direct and support thousands of Black-owned businesses across the country.”
CBCC previously worked with Uber Canada last year to offer $0 Delivery Fees for Black-owned restaurants, along with $500 in vouchers for dozens of Black-owned small and medium-sized businesses in Canada.
