In a first, PrecisionOS launches surgical robotics education platform in VR

The company is harnessing Facebook's Oculus Quest to make their platform portable and potentially cost-effective for large teams.

PrecisionOS, the developer of a virtual reality learning platform for surgical education, launched an interactive robotics platform in VR. The VR surgical training is to be used through the portable Oculus Quest headset, making it more cost-effective for large teams.

Why it matters: “Not only is traditional robotics training a complex and costly endeavour,” says PrecisionOS Founder, CEO and Orthopedic Surgeon Danny Goel, M.D, “but published research has demonstrated that on-boarding and training times are a substantial barrier to robotics adoption.”

Details: According to the company, typical surgical education involves flying surgeons, residents, and sales reps to a facility with a robot, which is costly and often done too far in advance of the surgery for the education to be effective.

PrecisionOS has recreated a responsive and dynamic robotics scenario including the robot, set-up and calibration with active cameras, software interface and a virtual patient for an in-depth and interactive robotics training experience available in virtual reality.

The bigger picture: With competency-based resident training increasingly the norm, medical education programs and healthcare facilities need a reliable way of rapidly conveying new information and assessing trainees as they move through the skills acquisition process.
